CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Jane lay back under the duvet, feeling guilty. During the sex, she couldn’t stop thinking about Eddie, and his hard, muscular body. Their relationship had gone wrong, but sex between them had always been thrilling. In comparison, Peter was slightly overweight and just hadn’t managed to excite her in the same way. She’d eventually had to fake an orgasm. She closed her eyes, then felt him gently touching her hair. He drew her close, nestling her head against him.

‘You know,’ he said, ‘I still feel bad about commandeering the entire conversation that day. I want you to know that I did pay attention to everything you said about your case. In fact, I’ve been thinking about it. Can I ask you a few questions?’

‘Sure, go ahead.’

‘OK, now, three college boys were the last to see the young girl. One was called Justin Moore, right? And he is an estate agent. The second is in Yorkshire and he is called Phillip Sayer?’

‘You have a very good memory.’

‘The third boy was John Kilroy, and he’s the one you haven’t questioned yet because he’s working on an oil rig, but you think he had the use of a car and the girl might have been in it at some point.’

‘Correct, and the reason I got so pissed off was I wanted it towed into the station for forensics to examine it.’

‘So, you want to interview John Kilroy because you suspect him more than the other two boys?’

‘Right. It’s more of a gut feeling than having actual incriminating evidence against him.’

‘Why do you feel that?’

‘Well, he hardly ever returns home, works about as far away as he possibly can, it’s as if he’s hiding out. Plus, he inherited the farm where his mother still lives, but, although it’s being left to go to rack and ruin, he refuses to sell.’

‘You think he could have buried the girl there?’

Jane sighed. ‘I don’t know, but I suspect he had intentions of running the farm.’

‘And out of the three, you reckon he was the ringleader?’

‘Yes, none of them reached their potential, which makes me think they were all involved in some way and then felt guilty, but Kilroy forced them to keep silent.’

‘Omerta,’ Peter said with a smile.

Jane laughed, touched that he had shown such an interest in her work. She reached up to kiss him. Soon all thoughts of Eddie fled from her mind as they made love – and this time she didn’t have to fake an orgasm.

Hickock knew he had made a mistake as soon as they walked into the restaurant. Everything about it, from the elegant wood panelling in the reception area to the plush red carpet and the crystal chandeliers, said ‘expensive’. The maître d’ welcomed Sydney as if she was an old friend and led them downstairs to a dimly lit dining room, and a small table for two with white napkins folded into cones.

There were a few other diners, a couple of middle-aged couples and two men in evening suits.
